The history of the emergence of chiropractic legislation in Australia is examined.  Events leading to the Western Australia Royal Commission on Natural Therapy in 1961, which precipitated Australia’s first comprehensive chiropractic legislation are highlighted.  A later government Committee of Inquiry into the registration of chiropractors in New South Wales is also highlighted.  This led to the N.S.W. Chiropractic Act 1978.  Similarities and differences in these two state Acts, separated in time and distance which identify historical influences are noted. Some conclusions on the legitimation process of chiropractic in Australia are made.
